GENEALOGY SOFTWARE FOR YOUR COMPUTER
Personal Computer Genealogy Software -
This type of software program enables you to store all your family information
on your personal computer (PC or MAC), quickly locate individuals and
family members and share that data with others.
Genealogical
Software Report Card - this site is no longer being updated which
is a great loss to those just beginning their family research. It provided
a side-by-side comparison of genealogy software programs and used an excellent
rating system that assessed their capabilities, strengths and shortcomings.
Unfortunately keeping pace with ever changing programs, new releases and
company buy-outs have no longer made the site feasible. Keeping it up-to-date
was probably darn near impossible however, I have still left it on my
‘LINKS’ list as it can provide a family researcher with a
list of things to look for when shopping for a good genealogy software
package.
On any given day there can be as many as a dozen different genealogy software
programs available for sale. Prices vary from FREE to $80.00 US plus shipping.
Shipping fees are becoming obsolete as you are now able to download most
programs from the companies website. There are as many different opinions
on their value as there are users. Everyone has a favourite, generally
because they have been using it the longest and are familiar with it’s
capabilities. I am no different. I have been using one software program
since 1997 - Family Tree Maker. I have learned its strengths and weaknesses
and have learned to adapt to both. Frankly the learning curve associated
with switching to a new program requires more time than I care to devote
to it. I’d rather spend the time working on my family research.
